Step 1 to Fitness Success!
You've decided to grab the bull by the horns and wrestle him for control of your health. You grab your sneakers, run to the nearest gym and sign up. For the first 2 months you're there so often you know the entire staff by name. A year later you wonder why you're still paying your dues. You wake up from the nightmare and realize you don't want that to happen to you.
Identify your goal
Identifying your goal can be the most important step to success. If minor weight loss (-10lbs) is your goal, you may decide that a lifestyle change isn't what you need. If your goal is healthy living, lifestyle change, more exercise or weight loss of 10 lbs + here's your next step!

See your Dr. or Physical Therapist even if you think you don't need to!
|
| Safety:
Safety is the #1 reason to consult your doctor before starting an exercise program or changing your diet. Unknown health concerns may put you at risk of death or injury. For instance, many of the clients I see for their initial consultation have high blood pressure. In extreme cases, exercising improperly while suffering from high blood pressure can result in death. Seeing your doctor is of particular importance if your goal is weight loss of 10 lbs or more or if you are currently experiencing chronic symptoms of any kind. Safety, however, should only be your most important reason to visit the doctor.

Motivation:
Your
doctor just might be your best motivator. Having goals has proved to be the best way to insure success. Having health or fitness goals keeps your eye on the prize. It provides you with a great reason not to skip a workout. In addition; if your doctor
prescribes exercise you may be able to defray the cost of your
membership or personal trainer. Contact your insurance company,
physical therapist or chiropractor.
If you're lucky enough to not be ordered to the gym by your doctor, don't worry,
they're many other sources of motivation available. A consultation with your
physical therapist or personal trainer will point you in the right direction.
Efficiency:
Exercise efficiently, work
on your goals without being derailed by injury. Chronic muscular and joint aches and pains can often be resolved through
exercise. However, improper excise selection or movements can also exacerbate these conditions. Recurring aches and pains may be a sign of more severe underlying conditions.
If you experience recurring complaints see a professional. For example;
lower back pain may be the symptom of a herniated disk. Doing exercises like crunches may cause further injury to the spine. Insure that you meet your goals efficiently and safely. Make sure you're doing the exercises that are right for you! Consult with your doctors and physical therapis and then your personal trainer to make sure you are on the path to success.
